44,000 voters registered in both Va. and Md., group finds

WASHINGTON -

Call it double-dipping, but a big error in voter registration has been exposed. FOX 5 has confirmed with a voter integrity group that 44,000 people are registered to vote in both Virginia and Maryland.

The numbers come from a cross check of voting rolls. The survey was conducted by the Virginia Voters Alliance and they said it should be a wake-up call for election officials in both states.

Reagan George is the president of the Virginia Voters Alliance. He said the issue could be poor record keeping or something else.

"It's just ripe for voter fraud,” he said. β€œIt's just like [having] dead voters.”

The state of Maryland said they are still looking into all of this, but Virginia told us their data suggests the problem is not as bad as the Virginia Voters Alliance say.

The Virginia State Board of Elections told FOX 5 they found five cases where people voted in Virginia and another state. Those are being referred to prosecutors.

Virginia Voters Alliance said they will continue to push for greater transparency when it comes to who is registered where.

Voter registration has become a particularly hot topic in Virginia. On Election Day last November, the attorney general's race was only separated by 165 votes before it was finally settled in February.
