Inside CMPD's Real Time Crime Center

Posted: Updated:
With the DNC in Charlotte a few years back, CMPD acquired a lot of technology.

And for the past year, they’ve put that to good use – with the ‘Real Time Crime Data’ center.

It’s a way for cops to track crime as it happens, when it happens and ultimately keep you safer.

On Thursday, CMPD released new info about how many arrests they’ve made over the past year.

With a thousand cameras spread across Mecklenburg County and a hundred license plate readers, police use these digital tools to capture crooks – at the Real Time Crime Center.

“They record the tags of vehicles that pass through that intersection. There have been numerous occasions of missing persons, wanted persons,” said CMPD Captain Allen Rutledge.

Once the reader goes off, police track where the car’s at,  deploy a chopper and track the car’s every move.

“It alerts our detectives in the real time crime center. We’ll use our cameras to locate the vehicle until an officer catch the suspect,” said Rutledge.

“A victim is able to see the first 2 letters of a tag. We can run a partial tag through our reader system,” said Rutledge.

Over the last year, the Real Time Crime Center at CMPD headquarters has netted nearly 2000 arrests. Nearly 40% of those were within 24 hours, and 60% were within a week.

Police can review robberies, shootings and find new clues to solve old crime cases.

“While officers were responding to the scene, we used our electronic monitoring system and who was there and prior to our officers even having crime scene tape put up, we were able to give them a list of subjects,” said Rutledge.
