U-M's Mitch McGary going pro after failed marijuana test

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (WJBK) -- University of Michigan forward Mitch McGary is going pro.

The sophomore announced Friday he will forego his final two years of eligibility and declare for early entry into the 2014 NBA Draft.

In a video posted on U-M's web site, McGary admitted to failing a drug test for marijuana and faced a one-year suspension had he returned to school.

McGary says he failed the drug test following the team's Sweet 16 game against Tennessee. "It's hurtful for me, but I want to put it behind me and move past it."

McGary further explained the story to Yahoo! Sports columnist Dan Wetzel.

McGary turned down a chance to enter the draft last year as a likely first-round pick and ended up having back surgery last season, putting his standing as an NBA prospect in doubt.

Coach John Beilein says McGary "injected an enthusiasm that cannot be matched." Teammates Glen Robinson III and Nick Stauskas declared for the NBA Draft earlier this month.
