Queen's Cup Steeplechase starts Saturday

Posted: Updated:
The 19th-annual Queen's Cup Steeplechase begins this Saturday, April 26 at 10 a.m.

Located in Mineral Springs, just outside of Waxhaw, the Queen's Cup hosts around 15,000 people for six horse races, Jack Russell Terrier Races and day full of tailgaiting.

"It's a tailgate part where the horses are invited," Jamey Price said."

Jamey is the son of Bill Price, who hosts the event.

"And it's so true...It's basically like a big tailgate party like you'd do at a Carolina Panthers game except you don't have to leave your tailgate and go watch the Panthers game, you get to stay at your tailgate spot and the sporting event comes to you. Which is the best thing ever. You get to sit all day and have fun with friends and drink and eat amazing food -- socialize, people watch -- it's a great day."

Legendary track announcer Mark Johnson will be calling the event for the first time.

"I'm the only person who's ever called the Kentucky Derby and the British Derby," Johnson said.

What are his thoughts on being in Union County for the Queen's Cup? How does this race compare to the rest?

"Well this is a world-class horse racing facility, and make no mistake, this is a world-class horse meeting as well," Johnson said."...The facilities are second-to-none. This would be one of the best jump meetings in the whole United States. This would not look out of place at all in Britain or in Ireland where steeple chasing is a far-more bigger sport than it is here in the states."
