CMPD's DWI Task Force - Checking in on Checkpoints

Posted: Updated:
CMPD’s DWI task force has 6 officers and a sergeant. For the 1st quarter of 2014, the task force has charged more than 300 people with impaired driving offenses.

They’ve also issued more than 2100 citations for things like speeding, reckless driving and seatbelt violations.

Over the past few months, they’ve set up several check points across Mecklenburg County.

On Friday, they released the results – with fewer deaths thanks to more patrolling. DWI deaths hit close to home for one mom – Linda Roberts.

“You never have to bury your children,” said Linda Roberts.

Nearly 15 years ago, Roberts lost her son Greg Buyers to a drunk driver.

“He was on 77 N, and a guy came down the exit ramp the wrong way and hit him. It only takes one person take one or more lives,” said Roberts.

Roberts says the driver who killed her son had a high blood alcohol content – 3 times higher than the legal limit.

“State trooper came to my door to let me know I had lost my son. I remember sitting on the floor and pulling out photo albums. I was totally in shock. Think of your families and friends. It’s just not worth the consequences,” said Roberts.

CMPD’s new DWI task force has already seen improvements in DWI deaths. So far this year, it’s half of what it was for the same time last year.

“It’s very hard. It stays with you for a long period of time – when you have to walk on someone’s door to tell them their loved one isn’t coming home,” said Sgt. Jesse Wood.

“Don’t make these officers go to someone else’s door and tell them their child has died,” said Roberts.

Roberts hopes others will pay attention and urges people to not drink and drive.

“It doesn’t bring my son back – people need to realize it’s just not worth it,” said Roberts.
