One-on-One With Mecklenburg County's Sheriff

Posted: Updated:
Mecklenburg County's top cop, Sheriff Chip Bailey, will retire this year.

Bailey was elected in 2008 and brings more decades of experience working in law enforcement.

The sheriff's main role is to keep the public safe.

Bailey has accomplished a lot in his 6 years including lowering the county's jail population.

“In 2007, there were 2900 inmates but today we have just over 1700 inmates. It’s a lot but it’s a 1000 less than before. What I mean about building characters not jail is if we can reduce the recidivism rate, and we have," said Bailey.

Bailey hopes the new sheriff who takes over this year will continue inmate programs in jails like the youth program, women's vocational program to name a few.

“They are constantly doing things either they are learning through classes, or vocational training or counseling or substance abuse. I hope the new sheriff would continue the same programs to change lives that we are housing. These people have made mistakes. They deserve an opportunity to turn their lives around," said Bailey.

The new sheriff will have to manage a $117 million budget.
"[The sheriff] have to secure courthouse, quorum in the courtroom. The Sheriff has been tasked with gun permits.”
“[CMPD] handles 911 calls. They handle the criminal activity related to that. The Sheriff deputies don’t do that and don’t investigate criminal activities except for jails or sex offenders.”
“Only the sheriff in NC can oversee the jails. No one else can. I can’t privatize it. That responsibility is mine," said Bailey.

Right now, there are 4 contenders in the sheriff's race - 2 Republicans and 2 Democrats.

You can vote to narrow that list down to 2 until May 6th and then pick your top cop for the county in the November elections.

The new sheriff will be sworn in December 1st.
