Suspected purse snatcher in custody

(WJBK) - A suspected purse snatcher along the border of Grosse Pointe Park and Detroit is in custody after a tip from the public.

"It's great - that's how the system is supposed to work. The public gets involved; contact the police; we make the arrest; bad guy goes to jail," says Grosse Pointe Park Public Safety's Chief Dave Hiller. They say a relative worried for his safety turned in 22-year-old Jamaine Thomas.

Police released surveillance video of a purse snatcher targeting at least two women on Easter Sunday. He successfully made off with one of thandbagsage.

In the first incident, he approached a woman leaving the Ye Old Tap Room on Charlevoix Street, near Alter Road, while she was getting into her vehicle. He grabbed her purse and the two are said to have struggled briefly before the strap broke. The suspect ran off without the purse.

In the second incident, the suspect walked through the open doors of Excalibur Park, a bar down the street. He grabbed a woman's purse sitting near her and bolted out the door.
