PHOENIX (KSAZ) - President Obama spoke out for the first time about a report that details as many as 40 veterans may have died while waiting for care at the VA Medical Center in Phoenix.

The President made the remarks during a news conference in the Philippines saying he ordered an investigation and will work with congress to find out what went wrong.

"I want to make sure they are getting the help that they need," said the President.

President Obama was in Manila Monday saying he heard about the allegations at the Phoenix VA and that he ordered the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to investigate.

"We take the allegations very seriously... I believe that if somebody has served our nation, then they have to get the benefits and services that they have earned" he said.

It is too late for 67 year-old Jim McCaw, he and his wife tried for months to get him in to see a cardiologist at the VA.

"It was the first thing I would do every week was call his physician and say, please get him in," said Rosie McCaw.

But for reasons she still cannot explain her late husband was never able to get that appointment. And the disabled Vietnam veteran died 16 days-ago.

"No one should have to live like my husband suffered, just denied flat out, denied medical attention," she said

"Just because he is not in the field holding a gun and wearing his boots doesn't mean that he doesn't deserve respect," said McCaw.

Rosie saved nearly every document related to her husbands care, she even wrote a letter to the VA's patient advocate.

"My husband does not deserve the blatant refusal of medical care that he should be receiving, he is entitled to be treated with respect," she said.

FOX 10 asked her if she got a response to her letters to the VA. McCaw replied, "No, and he died two weeks later".

If you or a family member think you were delayed in receiving care at the VA Medical Center in Phoenix, the VA Inspector General's Office wants to hear from you. They can be reached at 1-800-488-8244.

Retired VA Doctor Sam Foote is also looking to speak with veterans whose care was delayed, he can be reached at sfootemd@gmail.com
