Tips to get good credit and keep it

Posted: Updated:
What’s your number? According to Experian, the average credit score is 681.

In Orlando, it’s a little bit lower: 671.

Experts say a good credit score is typical 700 or higher.

Financial advisor Kat Almulla has steps to help rebuild credit.

First, review your report for accuracy. People can be lazy and won’t bother to check, but they can get a free credit report at freecreditreport.com. Check for strange line items.

If you have issues and you’re trying to repair your credit, set up an alert at freecreditreport.com.

It will alert you if someone has taken out credit or if there is an inquiry.

If you find something that isn’t yours that is questionable, contact the credit bureau.

Inquiries are equally important. If you accept a credit card at a department store, and do it on a regular basis, those all show up as inquiries when potential lenders review your credit.

If you do it in a short period of time, it gets consolidated. But if 50 inquiries show up when you’re shopping for a car – because they may shop your loan -- that doesn’t look good.

Reduce the amount of debt you owe. Make an excel spreadsheet and put in all your credit cards organized by the amount of interest. Pay the higher-interest cards off first.
