App ticketing coming to LIRR and Metro-North in 2015

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Sometime in 2015 when you are running for a Metro-North or LIRR train you will be able to bypass the the ticket booth lines and the vending machines, and simply open an app on your phone or tablet to buy your ticket for the same price and show it to the conductor.

The app is being formulated by Masabi, an app company selling online tickets for the Boston transit system and Nassau County buses.

The London- and New York-based app company Masabi says in Boston's transit system 25 percent of the commuters use the app to buy tickets.

It will be free with no service charge to use. The app should be available in a year. But even the president of the MTA had some reservations about a successful launch. Tom Prendergast said his concerns have been met.

The MTA board approved the $2 million to begin the app process. Two competitors, including CooCoo that does the text schedule times widely used now, complained that the process was unfair.

Because LIRR and Metro-North are the biggest commuter railroad systems in the world, one problem may be just sheer volume. Also if you sleep on the train you will have to wake up to show the app ticket to the conductor.
