Detroit Lighting Authority completes first phase of lighting project

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - The city of Detroit completed its first phase of the public lighting pilot program Wednesday.

Two neighborhoods now have new street lights. About 4,600 lights were installed in ten weeks.

Those living by the new lights tell FOX 2's Amy Lange they are much brighter, making them feel much safer.

Work for new lighting begins in these zip codes on Thursday: 48205, 48215, 48219, 48223, 48224 and 48235. Installation in those areas is expected to be completed by the end of 2014. All neighborhoods are expected to be completed by the end of 2015, and thoroughfares that use underground wiring are expected to be completed by the end of 2016.

Mayor Mike Duggan also said Wednesday the city will release a demolition schedule in May, planning to demolish 5,000 homes in the next year.
