Dozens of NJ high school students arrested in class prank

Posted: Updated:
NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) - 62 students will face burglary and criminal mischief charges after a senior class prank at Teaneck High School turned criminal.

Police responded to a burglar alarm at the school in northern New Jersey at  2:12 a.m. on Thursday.  As they approached the school they found kids running away but many still inside the building, trying to hide.

Police found urine in the hallways, graffiti, petroleum jelly on doorknobs, desks flipped over and balloons throughout the building.  They said there was extensive damage in terms of cleanup but little monetary damage.

38 of the students under arrest are juveniles.  The other 24 were adults.  The Juveniles were handed over to their parents and the adults were processed at the Teaneck Police Department and then Teaneck Municipal Court.

Police say they were still trying to determine how the students got into the school.

The school district is trying to figure out how to deal with kids in terms of suspension, expulsion, or graduation and there was no timetable for when a decision will be made.

The cleanup was completed in time for the school to open on Thursday.

More than a dozen police agencies were involved in rounding up students, including the Bergen Co. Sheriffs Department and numerous local town police departments.

A 16-foot-long exotic snake reportedly slithering around New Jersey's largest lake is apparently a suburban legend. Or the snake just isn't hungry. The state has stopped looking for the reptile after scientists failed to find any evidence of it in Lake Hopatcong and traps baited with chicken were left untouched. Three unconfirmed sightings this month of a snake, perhaps an anaconda as long as 16 feet, raised concerns among visitors and swimmers.
