ASU among schools in US federal sex assault probe

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - The U.S. Department of Education released the names of 55 colleges and universities facing a Title IX investigation over how they handled sex abuse complaints.

A White House task force says that one in five female students is sexually assaulted.

Now the Dept of Education is looking into the enforcement procedures at several schools including Arizona State University.

A poster at the college says "It is time to talk about it. Sexual assault awareness".

FOX 10 talked with several students about the problem.

"I feel that a lot of college guys don't care get drunk do stupid things abuse women sexually, and I do not even hear anything about it," said Julia Wiggins.

"That is the type of abuse every girl faces when they go out to have a good time it has become so accepted and so normal it is just sick," said Candice Banks.

"The only thing I can say is some girls on this campus act a little irresponsible and put themselves in situations they should not be it is not their fault or anything but these situations could definitely be avoided," said James, an ASU student.

ASU says it takes sexual misconduct complaints very seriously, and the federal probe is not directed at whether the university violated the law, but instead how the university handled sex abuse investigations.

ASU says it's cooperating with the feds and adds; "The office of civil rights has approached ASU with the possibility of entering into a pre-investigation resolution, and the university has been waiting for further word".

Many notable schools are listed in the investigation. They include Harvard, Princeton, Dartmouth, and Cal-Berkley.
