Silver Spring fifth grader selected as finalist for Google Doodle contest

SILVER SPRING, Md. -

You may see it every day on its home page. The Google logo -- but sometimes with a twist. It's called the Google Doodle and one elementary school student in our area is getting a shot at creating her own.

In math class, the mind of Shashi Arnold may wander a little.

But she saw the challenge of the Doodle 4 Google competition.

"[The theme] was if you could invent one thing to change the world,” said Shashi, a fifth grader at East Silver Spring Elementary School in Montgomery County.

“I didn't think I would make it, but I thought I might as well try,” she said.

And so she did.

“At first, I did a weird rainbow machine that depolluted the air,” said Shashi. “Then I did glasses that made people see people for who they were and not for how they perceived them. But I didn't know how to draw that, so I didn't do it.”

So what was her inspiration for her “Imagination Transportation” doodle?

“Whenever we get a big box, I like to play in it and pretend like I’m flying around and stuff,” she said. “And I thought it would be cool since cars cause a whole bunch of pollution and [what] if it was fueled by imagination.”

Her doodle made her one of the nation's 50 finalists. Representatives from Google came to her school.

“They kind of advertised Google a lot and then they announced that I was the state winner,” Shashi said smiling.

Google gave every student a shirt with her doodle on it.

“If I'm one of the five finalists, then I get a college scholarship,” said Shashi. “Then if I am the overall winner, then I get a bigger college scholarship.”

But when we asked her where she wanted to go for college, she hasn’t gotten that figured out yet.

Whichever child wins will have his or her doodle as the Google Doodle of the day.

Shashi will get a trip to California to Google headquarters.

But she said she will be just fine even if she doesn't win it all.

“It's just fun to kind of tell a story with art,” she said.

If you would like to help Shashi get that scholarship, you can vote for her doodle here: https://www.google.com/doodle4google/vote.html#d=d2-4
