CMS Parents Want Every School in Mecklenburg County To Have a Nurse

Posted: Updated:
Mecklenburg County’s Health Director says injuries are the leading cause of death amongst kids.

The CDC recommends 1 nurse per 750 students but CMS has 1 nurse per 1200 students.

The health director is pushing for 33 more nurses so that every school in the county can have a nurse.

“[Here, you have] anything from a runny nose to an injury out on the playground, if they bumped into something,” said Dr. Sharon Mazurek, who is the principal at Ballantyne Elementary.

The health room at Ballantyne Elementary is empty because there isn’t a nurse to help out.

“This is sick room central. We have a nurse here 2 days a week and every other day we have one that we share with another school,” said Mazurek.

Many CMS parents hope that the nurse shortage in schools will soon be fixed.

“I’ve seen my daughter had a seizure and now has life threatening food allergies,” said Teri Saurer.

“I’m concerned if something happens at school that the extra medical attention is there,” said Teri Saurer.

“I think it’s important for not only my child with a medical condition, but the others who don’t. I’ve had one break his arm, one with a concussion,” said Laurie Briggs.

Parents say nurses help reduce the burden from teachers.

“Accidents happen every day. Children sometimes go home with broken bones or concussions that go unnoticed or untreated because there is no nurse at the school,” said Saurer.

The budget for nurses doesn’t come from the school system but from the health department.

“There is not a face to this cause and I don’t want my child to be the face. I don’t want there to be a death to any child,” said Carrie Merner.

“So many times nothing is done until a tragedy occurs and then realize we did need the school nurse. We’d like our county commissioners to act before there is a tragedy in CMS,” said Saurer.

Here’s how you can help – there’s a public hearing on the budget next month. Commissioners will decide if every school will get a nurse.
