Bruno The Police Dog Who Was Shot Goes Home

People clapping, some even tearing up, as Bruno, the Anaheim Police K-9 injured while on duty, leapt through the door of Yorba Regional Animal Hospital with his handler RJ Young.

After six weeks of difficult recovery, the dog is going home!

"I can't thank you all enough" said an obviously excited Young, who marveled at the many letters and e mail he has gotten from around the world. "It's because of all that BRUNO is well enough to leave here today!" he added. Officer Young was with his dog 6 weeks ago, when a man, suspected of shooting at probation officers, allegedly shot at Anaheim officers, hitting Bruno.

The bullet went through the dog's muzzle, hitting the ribs around the lung, which collapsed. Veterinarians left the bullet in, repaired the lung and put a plate in his muzzle. At one point, during his recuperation, BRUNO ended up with a life threatening case of bloat, which necessitated more emergency surgeries.

The public has donated enough money for Bruno's post care. He will be officially retired May 15th, at a public ceremony in ANAHEIM'S City Hall.

Officer Young will buy BRUNO from the city, for $1, as is customary with retired K-9's. But he is already home with his human partner, and definitely not working any more.

There are already plans for at least one BRUNO statue at a local dog park. Fitting his star status, the dog sped by cameras outside the hospital: no comment, no autographs. You can't blame him, We could almost hear him thinking "I'm OUTTA HERE, wanna go home! Add some slobber to that :)
