Changes Coming To Roosevelt Boulevard Where Deadly Crash Occurred

City officials want to improve safety on the Roosevelt Boulevard.

Construction starts Monday on a new project for people crossing the street, FOX 29's Steve Keeley reports from Northeast Philadelphia.

It's the very same spot from which he reported last July when a mother and three sons were killed as they crossed the street.

Police blame alleged drag racers going by for killing them. They also blamed the mother for jaywalking. But everybody said there isn't another place to cross. The deadly crash occurred at Second Street and the boulevard, and that is where they will now put a place so people can safely cross.

On Friday, the Philadelphia Streets Department put out a press release that didn't get much notice. But starting Monday night, it like will get lots of notice from the press, pedestrians and people driving through this stretch in the Olney section of Northeast Philadelphia because lanes will be shut down between Third and Mascher streets on both sides of Second Street on the boulevard between 8 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Monday through Friday through the end of June.

They are putting in this new stop light crosswalk for pedestrians only.

It should be done about three weeks before the anniversary of that crash that killed the mother and three children, Keeley reported.
