DETROIT (WJBK) - Detroit police has increased its presence in southwest Detroit after a 19-year-old was killed during a Cinco de Mayo parade Sunday.

The shooting happened shortly before 2:00 p.m. near West Vernor Highway and Ferdinand Street and forced organizers to cancel the parade, which is now in its 50th year. Police arrested a 24-year-old suspect just moments after Andreas DeJesus was shot.

Investigators believe the shooting is gang related and have increase patrols in the area to discourage possible retaliation. FOX 2's Ron Savage reports police have no intelligence that suggests retaliation will happen, but they just want be on scene and prepared.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig said the suspected gunman is not believed to be a gang member but that DeJesus likely has ties to a particular gang, Latin Counts.

Sources say the suspect has a concealed pistol license and told investigators he was acting in self defense. Prosecutors are still reviewing the warrant to determine if the suspect will face charges.
