'Park Chicago' app expanding citywide

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

After a successful pilot, Chicago begins an expansion Tuesday of its new pay-by-cell program.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel plans to announce that the new pay-by-cell program will begin to roll out the service Tuesday to the 36,000 meters throughout the city. The program is part of the Emanuel administration's renegotiated parking contract.

The city began using 'Park Chicago' in certain areas three weeks ago. It lets drivers pay for parking by using their cell phones. The program will be available at all metered boxes by the end of the summer.

Officials say the app is more convenient, because if you are sitting at dinner and realize you need to put more money into the meter, you can just take out your phone and by right there, rather than running out to the meter.

Crews spent Tuesday morning putting up signs for the app in neighborhoods.

'Park Chicago' is available for both iPhone and Android. For more information, visit the website.

Although the program will be offered citywide, meter boxes will remain in place and will still take cash, credit and debit cards.

Locals say they are excited to start using the new app. They say it will be much more convenient than carrying around coins.
