Famous Chicago hot dog stand set to close

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The hot dog scene in Chicago suffered a major blow Tuesday.

The owner of Hot Doug's announced on Twitter that he's shutting down in October, leaving many of Hot Doug's diehard fans saying, “dog gone it.”

"I’m feeling down, so I will be here a lot between now and October 5th," said one man who adores Hot Doug's.

And he's not alone.

The scene was packed outside Hot Doug's at California and Roscoe shortly after the restaurant sent its social media fans into a frenzy with the tweet.

The tweet read: "My friends, we'll serve our last encased meats 10/3. We thank you for your support & suggest you don't get a Hot Doug's tattoo any time soon."

The news had spread faster than mustard on one of Hot Doug's famous wieners.

However, one question remained, and that is why close down a place that has been named home to one of the most life-changing hot dogs in America.

Owner Doug Sohn said it's really pretty simple.

"You know, it's time to go. It's my restaurant, it's my time to go. There's no hidden agenda, it's just time to do something else. I don't know what that is," said Sohn.

And most of the longtime customers FOX 32 spoke with agree, after 13 years of great food, Doug has earned a break.

"He’s made a lot of people happy, served a lot of good meals, and brought a lot of people together. So if he wants to take time off, he's earned it," said another Hot Doug's fan.

This is an end of an era for a Chicago hot dog institution, but bitter sweet for Doug who says he may not miss the hot dogs, but he will miss the customers.

"That’s the part I love, that's the part I’m going to miss most. Hanging out with people, making them laugh, and making them lunch. It's been great," added Sohn.

News of Doug’s closing is also a blow to foodie's on a budget. The restaurant was recently voted number one on Yelp's list of best inexpensive places to eat in Chicago.
