'Selfies' play explores social media and cyber-bullying

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A new play about cyber-bullying is currently touring public schools in Westchester County. "Selfies" is a play directed towards teens and adults to bring awareness to social media responsibility.

The play was co-written by the entire cast and is spearheaded by director Joshua Langman, a senior at Sarah Lawrence College.

"It's a show about social media and cyber-bullying and the importance of telling your own story the way that you want to tell it," he said.

Through four characters, "Selfies" spotlights current social media scenarios, like a Facebook profile that lives on after someone's death, the girl who only socializes via the internet, and the boy who hides his sexual identity behind a fake Facebook account.

There are messages about social communication, self-image, friendship, and acceptance. "Selfies" also explores the miscommunication and abuse of social media. The show encourages the students to have an interactive session and they do that with a talk back. During these talk-back sessions the students ask the actors questions and receive advice. There was a lot of enthusiasm from the students of P.S. 30.

"I really liked how the actors incorporated things we use in normal everyday text messaging and social media," Amaras said.

"It shows people values of life," Michael said.

"Never judge a book by its cover," Dary said.

The goal of this theater outreach program is to use dramatic arts to educate and bring social awareness to students.

"This is a show that is about the moment we are living in right now," Langman said. "And especially if you're in high school or middle school, you should see this show because we wrote it for you."
