Tillis Wins Republican Primary, Will Face Hagan In Nov.

Posted: Updated:

Thom Tillis has won the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate and will square off against Democrat Kay Hagan in November. Tillis is the North Carolina Speaker of the House, and he said he has no plans at the moment to step down from that position.

During Tillis' speech at his campaign party Tuesday, he said, "For the last four years, I've been in Raleigh cleaning up Kay Hagan's mess, and now I want to go to Washington and clean up Kay Hagan's mess."

Tillis was up against seven other Republicans in the Primary, which made it tough to get more than 40% of the vote, the necessary threshold to declare a winner. Republicans have a lot riding on this U.S. Senate race. They see Tillis as the candidate to beat Hagan and help them gain control of the Senate.
