Nigerian-Chicagoans speak out against Boko Haram

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Many of the Chicago area's estimated 30,000 Nigerian immigrants live, worship or dine in the Uptown neighborhood. At one popular restaurant Tuesday, there was deep concern about the latest human rights outrages of Islamist extremists Boko Haram.

“I don't see those people as Muslim or Christian. I just call them evil,” said Rahmon Olugunna, a Nigerian Muslim immigrant.

FOX 32 News asked Ayo Rogers, a Nigerian Christian immigrant, what he thinks should be done to Boko Haram.

“Well, they should be taken out and shot, really. If you ask me, you know, they definitely crossed the line here,” said Rogers.

On one wall of the restaurant was a picture of Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan. For several years, his government's faced a rising threat of murderous violence from Islamist insurgents based in Northern Nigeria. That area's predominantly Muslim, in contrast to the mostly Christian south.

Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau claim of responsibility for the kidnapping of nearly 300 schoolgirls takes the struggle to a new level, as does his threat to sell them for $12 each to other Islamist militants. The group's name, Boko Haram, means "Western education is sinful." They're threatening to destroy other schools.

Desperate relatives are frustrated by the Nigerian government's failure to find the children.

"The future...where are we getting," said a Nigerian kidnap protester, as he broke down in tears.

Sen. Mark Kirk denounced "this heinous crime," saying any sale of the girls would be "modern day slavery." Kirk endorsed President Obama's decision to send Americans to help Nigeria locate and recover the kidnapped students.

Outraged British politicians indicated that country, too, would join the hunt for the kidnappers and their victims.

At a South Side news conference, Rev. Jesse Jackson called for strong action.

“The rape and the abduction and the killing and the selling. We must not let that happen. He can be found. If Bin Laden can be found, the head of Boko Haram can be found,” said Jackson.
