Demoiselle 2 Femme: 'Young Ladies to Women'

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Staying out of fights and trouble is the goal of a girl's group on Chicago’s south side. FOX 32's Darlene Hill found they are not just talking about the problem of fighting and violence, but looking for solutions.

A group of young ladies were asked, why is it that girls fight? Some responded because of boys, gangs and hating.

"If you have been involved in a fight in high school, I want you to stand up,” said the instructor of Demoiselle 2 Femme.

Seven out of 24 girls stood up.

“And let's just take it a step further, how many of you have had a physical fight, ever?” the instructor asked.

The girls are 13 to 18 years old and all but one stood up.

This group called Demoiselle 2 Femme, French for "Young Ladies to Women," meets weekly to openly talk about what's going on in their changing lives. They also discuss why it's so important for young ladies to conduct themselves as ladies.

"She who is not taught by her mother is taught by the world. And what we have right now in our community are girls who are being taught by the world…bad girls club and real housewives…they all say if she says something I don't like or if something happens, I fight," said Sherida Morrison of Demoiselle 2 Femme.

D2F works with about 500 girls in Chicago’s low-income neighborhoods each year to change that way of thinking.

Things like forgiveness, respect for themselves and others and how to conduct themselves in a restaurant, and simple things like how to hold a knife and a fork are taught right here.

The girls tell FOX 32 they share that information with other friends.

"I be trying to tell them, girl that ain’t cute, you don't need to do that...at first, I didn't really care cuz I ain’t know how to respect myself,” said Brenna McCray.

"I used to be really selfish and only think about myself, but this group has taught me to give back," said Ahnnyshia Hibier.

The group said they measure its success rate by how many of these girls enroll and graduate from college.
