CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A retail theft suspect has been charged after he was critically injured when police used a stun gun on him early Wednesday in the Old Town neighborhood.

Dominique Franklin faces two counts of resisting a peace officer and a one felony count of retail theft, police announced early Thursday. His home address and exact age were unknown, but police said he is thought to be in his 20s.

During a retail theft arrest about 12:15 a.m. in the 200 block of West North Avenue, officers used a taser on Franklin, who was resisting arrest and “refused to cooperate with officers,” police said.

After the taser was deployed, Franklin suffered a head injury when he fell to the ground. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he remains in “critical but stable” condition, police said.

Witnesses told reporters at the scene that they were inside a nearby Walgreens store – located at 1601 N. Wells St. – when they heard employees talking about a man who had stolen items from the store and running away along the sidewalk.

Witnesses also added that they later saw a man lying in the street outside, not moving, with multiple police SUVs nearby. That man was later loaded into an ambulance and taken away.

It was not immediately known when a bond hearing would be scheduled as Franklin remains hospitalized, police said.
