Hey, Hey Carolinas! I'm doing the job I love in the place I love, my hometown. I grew up in Concord and I'm grateful to be back home telling the stories of such wonderful people in and around the Charlotte area.

United States House Speaker John Boehner signed Kilah's Act Thursday. The legislation named after Cabarrus County 4 year old Kilah Davenport passed unanimously in the US Senate on Wednesday. Davenport was severely beaten by her stepfather.

The legislation directs the U.S. Attorney General to issue a state-by-state report on child abuse prevention laws within 6 months, with a particular focus on penalties for cases of severe child abuse. The goal is to highlight deficient laws and provide states with the opportunity to fix those laws before another tragedy occurs.

Kilah’s grandmother Leslie Davenport said the 7 to ten year prison sentence Kilah’s abuser received wasn’t enough. She and her family fought to pass Kilah’s law on the state level. It strengthens penalties for child abusers.

But Kilah’s family didn’t stop there. The Kilah Davenport Child Abuse Protection Act, signed by House Speaker John Boehner Thursday, is a monumental step for Leslie Davenport. She said, “It was a long struggle, and it was a long struggle for her (Kilah), and just to know that I’ve lost Kilah here on the earth, I hope to gain millions of other children that I save.”

Davenport said, “God gave this to us for a reason. He gave Kilah to us for a reason. He knew all along what her journey was going to be, and it is to help save other children’s lives.”

North Carolina Congressman Robert Pittenger praised the passing of the act.

“Let us pause to remember sweet Kilah, her beautiful smile, and her brave fight against the horrific injuries she suffered at the hands of her stepfather. Let us also remember Kirbi, Leslie, and Brian Davenport, who sacrificed so much to care for Kilah and who have worked tirelessly to end child abuse."

The next step is for President Obama to sign Kilah’s law. Leslie hopes to be there for that, and she also wants to start a program for young people educating them on ways to prevent child abuse.

Davenport died in March, just shy of her fifth birthday.

We all have heard of the saying, “a dog is a man’s best friend," it may sound a bit cliche but it’s true for Fred Shrill and his dog Tucker. “I wouldn’t take the world or him,” said Fred as he smiled.

Friday, for my assignment, I was tasked with a ride-along in a Global Rallycross car, at The Dirt Track at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Cars that go zero-to-60 in 1.9 seconds -- that's faster than a formula one car. We're talking about machines with absurd power. Not a bad gig... But enough to make you a little skittish...
