A political science expert says Republican Thom Tillis had a “solid win” in Tuesday’s Primary, but now that he’s facing incumbent Democratic Senator Kay Hagan, the high stakes race for U.S. Senate is, in some ways, just beginning.

Tillis said, “We’re ready to get started. There won’t be a break here. We’ll be working every single day between now and November.”

Hagan was back on the job in Washington Wednesday, but neither campaign will be far away from voters. The ads will ramp up dramatically, but it won’t just be because the election is getting closer. The race is important not only statewide but also nationally because it could help determine which way the balance of power swings in the U.S. Senate, and because of that, a Catawba College professor says you can expect to see lots of negative ads, not only from the campaigns, but from outside groups.

Dr. Michael Bitzer said, “My expectation is they will be multiple times more probably than the candidates spend, just because of the importance of this particular race for control of the U.S. Senate.”

Bitzer estimates $30-50 million will be pumped into North Carolina for this race.

Bitzer said, “The likelihood in North Carolina is it will be among the most expensive races in the nation as a whole for this year.” And he predicts a close race. Bitzer said, “This is one of the key races that is a pure toss-up. We have to give some advantage to the Republicans because of what the electorate will look like in the fall. But this is a very close race by all estimates.”

We all have heard of the saying, “a dog is a man’s best friend," it may sound a bit cliche but it’s true for Fred Shrill and his dog Tucker. “I wouldn’t take the world or him,” said Fred as he smiled.

Friday, for my assignment, I was tasked with a ride-along in a Global Rallycross car, at The Dirt Track at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Cars that go zero-to-60 in 1.9 seconds -- that's faster than a formula one car. We're talking about machines with absurd power. Not a bad gig... But enough to make you a little skittish...
