GM RECALL: Why are parts taking so long?

Posted: Updated:

Three months after General Motors began recalling 2.6 million vehicles over a faulty ignition switch, there's still a long wait to get parts and frustrated customers are struggling to figure out what is taking so long.

It's been 5 weeks since the head of General Motors was grilled by Congress -- but very little has changed.

"When I got there, I couldn't turn the key off," Len Cushing told Fox 9 News. "It was stuck in the on position."

Ironically, Cushing received the recall notice two days after his car refused to shut off. For the past week and a half, his Pontiac Solstice has been sitting at the dealership -- but he knows they're not the reason his car isn't ready to get back on the road.

"It's a GM problem that they're just not responding with parts quick enough," Cushing said.

It turns out that after the automaker identified and fixed the faulty ignition switch back in 2006, they didn't change the part number. That means all the parts had to be thrown out since there was no way of knowing if what is in stock is safe.

"Now, there are no parts to fix my car because they pulled everything back," Cushing explained.

Fox 9 News contacted a General Motors spokesperson in Detroit who said that parts are being made and shipped, but couldn't say how many were available or how many cars have been fixed so far.

"I've called GM twice now and they cannot give me an answer when parts will be available," Cushing told Fox 9 News.

Cushing is far from alone. GM's Twitter account is flooded with questions from frustrated owners of recalled vehicles. Most are asking the same question -- How long should I expect to wait for a part to arrive? The response from GM customer support has been a cut and paste of apologies for the inconvenience.
