Woman pulled from Lake Michigan identified

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (Sun-Times media Wire) -

Authorities have identified a body recovered from Lake Michigan by divers in Lake Forest Thursday morning as a woman from the north suburb.

Rebecca Long, 32, of Lake Forest, was found near a beach in her North Shore hometown, after emergency crews responded to reports of a swimmer in distress about 8:21 a.m., according to Lake Forest Deputy Police Chief Karl Walldorf.

Her body was recovered at 10:54 a.m., but the woman had no identification, so police and the Lake County Coroner’s office were unable to name her until nearly 7 p.m. Thursday, Walldorf said.

On Friday, police confirmed that Long was wearing orange running sunglasses, black running pants, a black T-shirt, running shoes and a black fleece jacket.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday morning.

The U.S. Coast Guard and as many as 20 local fire departments responded to Forest Park beach after pedestrians reported seeing a swimmer in distress off the boat ramp side of the beach, to the south of the public beach.

At one point, a 25-foot Coast Guard response boat and at least six other dive boats were in the water about 20 yards off the boat launch.

Randy Stauber of Lake Forest was walking when he went to the bluff overlooking the rescue area to see what was going on with the helicopters circling.

“I’m impressed with the response — all the communities,” he said. “It’s a tragedy.”

Lake Forest police are investigating. Anyone with information should contact detectives at 847-234-2601.
