Doctor uses Google Glass to help patients

Posted: Updated:
They're the hottest glasses on the market, but one local doctor is using google glasses for an unexpected reason. The Tampa plastic surgeon uses his high-tech specs to help his patients.

Dianna Brim wanted a little boost so she turned to Dr. Rich Castellano.

Now, he can get a little extra help lifting, nipping and tucking by just blinking his eye.

The board certified facial plastic surgeon is one of the first in the country to use google glasses while he's working on patients. Using the technology, we can actually see what he sees in real time.

He started using them in November.

"We really want to offer the latest treatment available to our patients," said Dr. Castellano.

The idea is so new he had to develop his own waiver for patients to sign.

"Helping others learn about it," said Brim. "Helping with the procedure. I think it's going to be great."

Patients like Alexis Nesbert said they don't mind.

"As long as it helped him do whatever he needed to do, I'm okay with it," said Nesbert.

Castellano simply puts on the glasses, looks up, and with a tap or a verbal command, he's connected to patient information.

"You can also watch on the viewfinder if you have before and after pictures you can bring those up," said Castellano.

It means he never has to look away from the patient-- even for a second.

Castellano can record the video or stream it live so other doctors can log on and learn.

"Some of these companies will fly people in to observe our techniques," said Castellano. "Well, now they can do this remotely."

Castellano said it helps patients, too.

"The other reason it's such a great technology is because we all tend to do a better job when we're being watched," said Castellano.

Dr. Castellano said the glasses can help him with just about any procedure. He's used them while working on about 25 patients.
