Landmark Luncheon 2014: Keep Piedmont Growing

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA, Ga. - Park goers can expect new development and additions to Atlanta's largest green space.

"I think they've captured the spirit of what Piedmont Park is," Kris Hemmett, a longtime patron of the park said.

During the Piedmont Park Conservancy's Annual Landmark Luncheon, friends and patrons of the park came out in their biggest hats and brightest pastels to celebrate the parks plan to "Keep Piedmont Growing."

"We're celebrating our 25th anniversary and we're really excited," according to Piedmont Park Conservancy COO Mark Banta.

Both native and transplant Atlantans reveled in how far along the park has come and how much further it has to go -- while hobnobbing and toasting to the future.

"The next phase will be Phase 2 -- Piedmont Gardens, the demonstration garden and other new things," Banta said.

The space on the right of the Sage entrance near Monroe Drive will be developed into the Piedmont Garden and it's one of the many renovations coming to Piedmont Park over the next couple of years.

During the luncheon, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed spoke about his time growing up visiting the popular green space and all of the changes it has undergone during his tenure as mayor. He even mentioned something comparable to the park in the works on the Westside of the city.

For years, the park has been a meeting place for people across the metro area and now -- it's being restored to it's original greatness and promises to be all of that and more.
