Atlantic City Boys & Girls Club Shuts Its Doors

Atlantic City, N.J.- 7-year old Treasure and her 11-year old brother Rondell are home right after school after finding out the Boys & Girls Club in their neighborhood is closed indefinitely.

"Last week they gave notices to the parents and I was like distraught," said their mother Deanna Smith. Her children went to the Boys & Girls Club on Pennsylvania Avenue in Atlantic City every day. A bus would pick them up from school and take them there.

"It has turned my life upside down. I'm trying to figure out where they're going to go for the summer and as far as after school activities," said Smith.

The Board Of Directors decided last Friday to close the place because of money problems. Officials say government funding was slashed and donations have been down.

"They didn't adjust to those as fast as they might have and that's what kind of got us to where we are. There's a point where you run out," said David Ross, a consultant brought in to help restructure and reorganize. He says some workers have been laid off and the Executive Director resigned this week.

"The buck stops somewhere and the Executive Director is responsible for the management, administration and operation of the program. The board wasn't happy and asked for his resignation," said Ross.

Felicia Wilson's 9-year old grandson started there three weeks ago. But she's more worried about the older children who will be out on the streets now through summer.

"They don't have anything to do or anywhere to go in Atlantic City. There's really totally nothing for us. Nothing for our children."

Officials say they're in talks with the Mayor, local businesses and the casino industry about possible funding options. They hope to reopen in the fall.
