reBar closes, leaving customers and workers hanging

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Christian Pascarella and his fiancée, Stefanie, are one of dozens of couples blindsided by news their wedding venue reBar shut its doors. They put down a $17,500 deposit to hold their wedding at the Brooklyn venue. Now they don't know where either the money or the owner is.

Heather Epstein and her fiancé, Brian Cavanaugh, are getting married next month. Their deposit was $20,000.

A sign on the door said reBar was bankrupt and closed. ReBar's owner, Jason Stephens, is nowhere to be found after notifying his employees over email the pub is shutting down.

With two weddings this weekend, many staff members came to work anyway to try to help couples find another location. They are not getting paid. Finding a venue is a big task. ReBar typically provides everything from the flowers to the alcohol and food for wedding parties.

Other venues, including 3 West Club, are now offering discounts and help.

Stephens did not respond to Fox 5's calls and emails seeking comment.

New York City subway riders are getting back service on the G train between Brooklyn and Queens. The return of service comes as the Metropolitan Transportation Authority reopens a tunnel Tuesday that was heavily damaged by Superstorm Sandy. The Greenpoint tunnel has been closed for five weeks for repairs. Shuttle buses were provided between G stops in Queens and Brooklyn during that time.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
