Some Schools in Cabarrus County May Face Redistricting

Posted: Updated:

Some students in Cabarrus County may have to switch schools, once a new school is built. On Monday, The Cabarrus County School Board of Education will vote on whether or not to tear down the old Odell Elementary School and build a new school for third, fourth and fifth graders only.

The area is most likely going to get socked with another round of redistricting. For this round, the school district says the redistricting will probably be with Cox Mill and Boger Elementary Schools. The plan is to take some students from those two schools and combine them with all the students at Odell Elementary to feed into two separate schools, a primary Odell Elementary, which would be kindergarten through second grade, and a new secondary Odell school, which would include third through fifth grades.

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Chris Lowder said, “We want people to form a relationship with their school, and when they do, it’s hard for them to say I don’t want to move, even if just a mile and a half away. It’s something that affects families, and we’re very aware of that, but in a high growth area, there’s no way to avoid it.”

The district says simply building another kindergarten through fifth grade school may have meant that attendance zones would divide up a neighborhood, so that children living on one side of the street may not go to the same school as students living across the street.

Kim Castles has a child at Odell Elementary. She’s seen the school go through three different rounds of redistricting already. Castles said, “Some of their friends (her children’s friends) have left, and that’s been hard, and then sometimes they come back because they’re redistricted again.”
