Police: security guard arrested in deadly shooting
One man is dead and another is behind bars after the two were involved in an overnight confrontation that ended in gunfire.
Winter Garden Police tell us the two men, who worked for different companies, were hired by Las Princesas night club in Winter Garden to work security. Winter Garden Police say around 11:30 on Friday night, witnesses tell them the two men argued.
According to witnesses, the suspect - Miguel Santos-Rivera took off his gun belt and attempted to get into a physical altercation with the victim - Edwin Mercado. Witnesses tell police Mercado pulled out his gun and aimed it at Santos-Rivera - but eventually holstered the weapon. At that point, Santos-Rivera took out his gun and shot Mercado in the chest.
Lt. Scott Allen, with the Winter Garden Police Department, says, "once we arrived the owner of the business had already taken the weapons, and secured them."
The victim was taken to Health Central Hospital in Ocoee where he died. Police say the suspect confessed to the shooting. He was booked into the jail on a second degree murder charge.
Detectives continue to interview witnesses to the shooting, so they can find out why the two men argued, in the first place.
