Friends caution 'Cold Water Challenge' after teen's drowning

Posted: Updated:

Davis Colley, 16, is described as a Central high School student who loved to socialize, wrestle and have a good time. Now that a nomination to do the "Cold Water Challenge" may have been a segue to his death, Davis’ close friends are urging everyone to end the trend.

“Davis was my best friend,” said Steeven Smith. “He got nominated for the cold water challenge. It’s a very popular trend that needs to stop.”

The Cold Water Challenge exploded in Minnesota over the past few weeks. The trend has people jumping into icy lakes after being challenged by friends on social media. The stunt is not only a nuisance for first responders, it’s what Steeven believes took Davis’ life.

“The last time I seen him, he got out of my car,” said Smith. “I hugged him and told him to be safe.”

What’s strange, it it’s true, Davis didn’t have a witness as those who jump usually do. Carver County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to Baylor Park early Friday night after lake visitors spotted Davis.

“He was here alone,” said Sergeant Jason Kamerud, Chief Deputy Carver County Sheriff’s Department. “We don’t have any other people who were with him and the three people who witnessed him were not here with him.”

Witnesses tell deputies that Davis was swimming, then slipped underneath the water and didn’t resurface. While Eagle Lake may not be among the deepest in Minnesota, current water temperatures are still considered too dangerous for swimming. Davis’ story now serves as a warning. If you’re going to take part in the risky fad, use common sense. A simple system of swimming with a buddy could have prevented Davis from not only dying senselessly but leaving those who loved him far too soon.

“It just shows you just how fragile human life is,” said Smith. “That you could be careful with everything you do because everything could change just like that.”

Friends of the Colley family have set up a donation fund to help make sure Davis has a proper burial. You can donate to the Colley Family Fund at Citizen State Bank or by sending donations to the address below.
