Philadelphia School District Police Officer Killed By Alleged Drunk Driver

Posted: Updated:

Upper Darby, Pa.-A biker is dead after police say he was hit by an alleged drunk driver.

The victim was a Philadelphia School District police officer.

Fox 29's Dave Kinchen reports.

Police say 32-year-old Salome Seay, an alleged drunk driver of a truck slammed into a motorcycle, killing the man riding it in Upper Darby on Friday night.

"The guy on the motorcycle flew up in the air, came down. He had a helmet on but landed straight on his head," witness Kathleen Kuhlen said.

The victim, a police officer with the School District of Philadelphia, was heading to work at the time of the crash at Marshall and Coverly roads.

Kathleen Kuhlen says her husband ran over to the biker identified as Gregory Hayes of Lansdowne.

"Just told him to relax, just take a breath, don't move, just relax," Kuhlen said.

Police say Hayes died at the scene, leaving behind a devastated family.

"Family man, wife, two 10-year-old twins. You know, just shouldn't have happened," Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said.

Chitwood says the suspect admitted to having drinks in Philadelphia and was allegedly driving erratically before the crash happened.

"The operator of the pickup truck wanted to race, drag race, high rate of speed on Marshall Road and cut right in front of the motorcycle. The motorcyclist didn't have a chance," Chitwood said."Hopefully, the system will take care of the operator and make sure the punishable offense was met."

The suspect is charged with vehicular homicide, DUI and aggravated DUI. He is behind bars tonight.
