Osprey Nest Causing Shut Down Of Town’s Fire Alarm

Posted: Updated:
Spring Lake, New Jersey (My9NJ) - A beautiful family of ospreys has decided to build their nest on top of Spring Lake’s fire alarm which sits about 100 feet up on a pole behind the police and fire station.

Ospreys are a protected species in the Garden State so the alarm had to be shut down while the family of birds remains nestled there.

The alarm has been shut down for over a month now and now some locals like Tom Shedaker are concerned.

“They have to have the fire alarm. They can move them somewhere else and the state can make an exemption,” he explained.

According to Borough Administrator Bryan Dempsey, there really isn’t any emergency to move the birds and reinstate the alarm. He said that the towns been working hand in hand with the Division of Fish and Wildlife to deal with the situation and that the alarm is really just one of several ways that the Spring Lake volunteer fire department is notified in case of an emergency.

“The whistle is a redundancy, it’s a means of communication that we use to get the first aid and fire people out, but it’s not the only means. We use cellphones, text message and pagers,” he said.

Once the Ospreys leave after the summer, it is likely that the town will move the nest somewhere close to where it is now. The species is known to mate for life and return to the same nest year after year.

There are only 550 ospreys in New Jersey.

StubHub is getting a lot of bad press, but the site is really the victim here. The hackers have hacked accounts from other sites, and then used that information to get into the StubHub accounts.
