"Divergent" star Shailene Woodley recently told talk show host David Letterman that she eats clay as a part of a detoxification diet. But are there really health benefits to eating clay?
The 22-year-old actress says she eats a teaspoon as part of her breakfast and even uses it as toothpaste. Registered Dietitian with UF Health Cancer Center at Orlando Health Dawn Napoli said some claim clay absorbs toxins, but she has not found any scientific evidence.
Napoli said clay absorbs water, but there is no science backing its health benefits. In fact, it could even upset your stomach or cause constipation. It is used in kitty litter as an absorbent. "It's not something I would recommend," she said.
Napoli said not to go to Hollywood for health advice. Instead, ask a doctor or health expert.
