Star of 'Rocky' on Broadway talks about role of lifetime

MYFOXNY.COM -

Recently I caught up with Andy Karl, the star of the new new musical "Rocky" on Broadway. We did the interview inside and outside the boxing ring at Crunch Gym on the East Side. We talked about a number of things from his intense physical training to what it's like playing Rocky Balboa, such an iconic character.

Karl recently received a Tony nomination for best performance by an actor for his work in this show, which was co-written and produced by Sylvester Stallone himself. Karl says playing Rocky Balboa is the role of a lifetime.

And Karl delivers a knockout. There's no question he was ready for this. As a matter of fact, Karl says he's never trained harder for anything in his life. he's been involved with the show for about three years now, learning not only to box but do it like Rocky: southpaw--or left-handed, which was even more challenging because Karl is naturally right-handed. However, he did get some help along the way in and out of the ring from none other than Stallone.

The passion Karl has for this role and for "Rocky" comes across loud and clear when talking to him and jumps off stage when you see the musical in person.

This is an incredibly physically demanding role. Karl works hard at staying in shape. He does a lot of weight work and a lot of TRX. He says he eats anything and everything because he has had trouble keeping on weight because he burns so many calories performing 8 times a week.

The Hess triangle is a tiny piece of private property in Greenwich Village. Manhattan historian Joyce Gold explained the origins of the property: After World War I, New York City seized a beautiful residence and tore it down so it could extend Seventh Avenue and the west side subway below it. The city left the building's owner only a tiny scrap of property so small it requested he donate the triangle to make way for a sidewalk. The man refused, took the city to court and won.
