Former Minnesota Quarterback Arrested In Mankato Assault Case

Posted: Updated:

Mankato,Minn.-Another day, another black eye for Rutgers University, and this time, it's a matter of life and death.

A transfer quarterback for the Scarlet Knights football team is charged in a vicious assault that leaves a Minnesota man clinging to life.

Fox 29’s Bruce Gordon reports.

Rutgers has previously made headlines for mistakes and misbehavior by coaches and administrators.

This time, it's a student/athlete, 20-year-old Philip Nelson, out on bail tonight, but in big trouble for what police describe as a brief bar fight with tragic consequences.

Former University of Minnesota quarterback Philip Nelson is used to seeing himself on YouTube videos, marching his team down the field.

Rutgers football fans had hoped to see Nelson in action in the fall of next year, wearing the scarlet "R" on his helmet.

In a criminal complaint charging Nelson with assault, police say the transfer quarterback got into a fight outside a Mankato Bar late Saturday night.

They say one man was caught on surveillance video running from the scene, sucker punched Kolstad,24, in the face or head.

Kolstad, himself a former football player who knew Nelson, went down in a heap.

Police say the video shows the victim was defenseless when Nelson delivered(s) a kick or kicks to his head.

The complaint suggests the assault may have stemmed from an argument over a girl.

Nelson transferred to Rutgers in January.

He participated in spring football, but would have to wait till the fall of 2105 to play for the Scarlet Knights.

On the Rutgers-Camden campus, news of the assault had students shaking their heads at this latest scandal.

It's not entirely clear who started the fight.

Police say when Nelson was apprehended at the scene, his eyes were bloodshot and he smelled of alcohol.

Police continue to search for the man seen punching Kolstad and then running away.

Doctors say the victim, a married father, is in grave condition, with severe head injuries.

No comment from Rutgers athletic officials.
