Smooth sailing: Taking advantage of wind at Lake Pleasant

Posted: Updated:
PEORIA, Ariz. - Sometimes in this job, you can draw a really tough assignment, but this was not one of those days.

I spent the day on a sailboat at Lake Pleasant, taking advantage of the strong winds we've been seeing over the past few days.

The wind turbines were spinning like airplane propellers, meaning it was a great day to get out on the water.

A lot of people really don't think about this because we live in the middle of the desert, right? But the valley is actually an excellent place to sail and there are lots of boats at Lake Pleasant.

Aboard a 25-foot long boat called the "Ezra" with Go Sail Arizona's Captain Clint, Tuesday was perfect.

"It is definitely one of the windier days," he said. "Where we are at in the foothills, winds from north shift, but makes the good sailors."

Clint sails down the California coast too, but he says there's something special about Lake Pleasant.

"It is odd.. a lot of people in Arizona don't even know there is a lake here, but it is 30 minutes from downtown and it always has wind."

The boat picked up speed and one side lifted up as we raced through the waves -- in the middle of the desert.

There's actually a lot of sailing around the valley: Tempe Town Lake and to the east, Bartlett, Saguaro, Canyon, Apache and Roosevelt Lakes.  All you need is wind and water.
