Afghanistan Veteran Receives The Medal Of Honor

Posted: Updated:

Washington, D.C- In a ceremony at the White House on Tuesday, President Obama honored Sergeant Kyle J. White for his heroic actions in Afghanistan in 2007.

White was serving in the United States Army’s 173rd Airborne, as an Elite Paratrooper, when his team of U.S. and Afghan National Army soldiers were ambushed by heavily armed Taliban forces.

Although White was knocked unconscious by an enemy launched RPG, he came to and immediately put himself in the line of fire to assist two of his fellow officers who were seriously wounded.

One did not make it.

Sergeant White was only 21 months into his service when he was ambushed, and he continued to serve the last 15 months of his deployment.

"And today we pay tribute to a soldier who embodies the courage of his generation. An young man who was a freshman in high school when the Twin Towers fell. And who just, five years later, became an elite paratrooper with the elite 173rd airborne-the sky soldiers. Today, we present our nation's highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor, to Sergeant Kyle J. White," said President Obama.

The President added, "When you're deployed, he later said, those people become your family. What you really care about is, I want to get this guy on the left and to the right, home."

Sergeant White no longer serves in the Army.

He went to college with assistance from the military and is now a banker in Charlotte, North Carolina.
