You can cash in by getting bumped from a flight. Consumer reporter Steve Noviello says the secret is to get bumped on purpose.
With fewer flights and packed planes, overselling is not uncommon. Make yourself a good bump candidate to take advantage of that.
Start by planning ahead. Pack your stuff in a carry on and research alternate flights. Then mention to the gate agent that your travel plans are flexible.
What can you expect to gain?
It's all based on convenience. Compensation is usually about $200, but can run up to $400 for domestic flights and $800 for international travel.
You can also request money for a hotel or a meal and a first class seat for bonus airline points or miles. You can even ask for compensation in cash.
