The Original Pantry Cafe Celebrates 90-Years Serving LA

Los Angeles, CA -

The Original Pantry, in downtown Los Angeles, celebrates its 90th Anniversary in 2014! On Wednesday May 14th, The Pantry will offer customers a short stack of pancakes (2 pancakes) and a cup of coffee for 90-cents from 6am- 3pm. (1 order per customer, dine-in only.)

From iconic Hollywood look-alikes to vintage cars, we will be celebrating this milestone in style. Owner and Former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan will also be on hand, helping to serve morning customers. (on site interviews available with Mayor Riordan from 6:30am- 10am) Thanks to loyal customers The Pantry has kept its doors open 24-hours a day 7-days a week since it opened in 1924.

In addition to all the festivities, The Pantry is holding an essay contest. In 500 words or less, we want to hear what the Pantry means to you, or a wonderful memory you may have had while dining. The winner's essay will become a part of LA history, and be shared with all visitors. The winning essay will be bronzed and added to the outside décor of The Pantry.

The Original Pantry has spent nine decades providing its customers with generous portions of traditional American cuisine. The restaurant started with 5 employees in a building at 9th and Francisco St. (one block west of Figueroa St.) It consisted of one room -- a 15-stool counter, a grill and a hot plate. It wasn't long before patrons were forming lines for seats. In 1950 the Pantry moved to the present location at the corner of 9th and Figueroa St. It is interesting to know that on the day it moved, lunch was served at the old location and dinner in the new, with no loss of time or customers.
