Police Arrest Alleged Washington Square Shooting, Aggravated Assault Suspect

Philadelphia Police have arrested suspect Ali Shaffiat for a shooting in Washington Square.

On May 10 at 7:20 pm, police responded to a shooting at 425 South Broad Street. When police arrived they were met by a 28 year-of-female, stated that while driving on the 500 to 600 block of Lombard Street a red 1995-1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse was following her blowing his horn while hanging out of the driver’s side window.

When the woman turned onto Broad Street she heard two (2) gunshots, one breaking her rear window. A 20 year-old female, who was seated in the front passenger seat, observed the suspect point a gun out of the passenger side window as they turned onto Broad Street.

The woman’s 4-month old niece was seated in the rear of the vehicle. No injuries were reported during this incident.

The suspect fled the area and was last seen west on Lombard Street.

On Tuesday May 13, Central Detectives conducted a search of all vehicle investigations involving a red Mitsubishi Eclipse within the city. The search resulted in a suspect and vehicle match.

The results from the Real Time Crime Center revealed a positive match to the vehicle depicted in the surveillance video along with the light colored document in the rear window which was later found to be a for sale sign.

Detectives then conducted a search for this vehicle which was found parked on the 800 block of Fernon Street with the license plate removed.

Shaffiat, 31 was then contacted and located on the 1600 block of South 7th Street. Shaffiat was arrested without further incident. He has been charged with aggravated assault and related offenses.
