Sen. Rubio meets with Syrian opposition leader

Posted: Updated:
U.S. Senator Marco Rubio met with Syrian Coalition President Ahmad Jarba Tuesday.

During the meeting, Rubio and Jarba discussed what can be done to stop the Assad regime's brutal repression of the Syrian people, Syria's ongoing humanitarian crisis, the need for the U.S. to develop a comprehensive strategy to deal with this crisis, and what assistance the U.S. can provide moderate elements of the opposition.
"President Jarba's visit comes at a critical moment for Syria, as the Assad regime's scorched earth brutality has created a humanitarian catastrophe that grows worse every day," said Rubio. "A month ago the U.S. Senate unanimously called for the Obama Administration to develop a comprehensive strategy for dealing with the humanitarian crisis in Syria. That urgent need only continues to compound with each passing day.
"As Americans, our hearts break as we see the suffering of innocent civilians who have been killed, maimed, and displaced because of the Assad regime's brutality," added Rubio. "Without our active engagement, Syria will continue to become a safe haven for foreign fighters and jihadists who will eventually threaten us and our allies. The moderate Syrian opposition needs our continued support. I pledged to President Jarba to continue to support efforts to draw attention to the plight of the Syrian people, and to strengthen and assist the Syrian opposition."
