Man sentenced for killing teen maintains innocence

Posted: Updated:
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - A northern Arizona man convicted of killing a teen in retaliation for a burglary maintained his innocence as he was sentenced to life in prison without possibility of early release.

A judge in Flagstaff on Tuesday sentenced 54-year-old John Willis of Williams for the 2013 shooting death of 17-year-old Manuel Navallez of Ash Fork.

Prosecutors contended that the killing was revenge because the teenager and two friends had broken into a home of friends of Willis and stolen jewelry so they could buy marijuana.

The Arizona Daily Sun reports that Willis told the victim's family in court that he was innocent and that the true killer remains at large.

However, the sentencing judge said the killing was a cold-blooded murder committed in a depraved and cruel manner by Willis.
