Residents launch petition to rename park to honor fallen officer

Posted: Updated:
MESA, Ariz. - A memorial is growing at Guerrero Park honoring fallen Mesa Police Officer Brandon Mendoza. He spent so much time rebuilding the park and making it safer for kids, many of those children leaving notes for the fallen officer.

Mendoza was such a familiar presence at the park that there is now a push to rename the park in his honor.

Mesa Police Officers stand watch at Guerrero Rotary Park in Mesa where a memorial has been placed for their fallen comrade.

Mendoza lost his life in a tragic car accident early Monday morning.

Now there is an online petition urging the City of Mesa to change the name of the park to honor the fallen young officer.

"We'd be honored to share the legacy of Officer Mendoza with the Gurrero Family and all the citizens of Mesa," said Pedro Guerrero's grandson Zarco.

The park is named after Zarco Guerrero's grandfather, Pedro Guerrero. He and his wife Rosaura were Mexican American pioneers in the city, opening a shop in 1918.

The couple founded the Rosarita Mexican Food company in 1945. Guerrero was active in keeping kids out of trouble, much like Mendoza.

Zarco Guerrero works as a sculptor who created a state of Cesar Chavez, he says he is willing to create a bust of Mendoza at no cost.

"And the City of Mesa could install it here in the park and that way we could continue to honor Officer Mendoza and Pedro Guerrera's legacy as well," he said.

While the Guerrero family wants to keep the parks name, people in the neighborhood agree something should be done to make sure Brandon Mendoza's contributions are not forgotten.

"I've just begun looking at the monument here, and I see a lot of young people have contributed, so I think that's important for them. They'll probably be here for a while, and it will be a good reminder of his work," said Natalia Hannon.
