This weekend people will lace up their sneakers to celebrate Caitlin Downing's life. The five-year-old died in 2012 after fighting a rare form of brain stem cancer.
Family friend Katie Chandler set up the event to walk in honor of Caitlin. All money raised will go to the Children's Brain Tumor Project out of the Weill Cornell Brain and Spine Center. The project does not receive any national funding, but Caitlin's mom, Denise Downing, said doctors are close to finding a cure. All they need is the financial help to research.
The walk for Caitlin is Sunday the 18th, starting at 8 a.m. at the Oviedo mall. Around 700 people will be walking in Caitlin's honor here in Central Florida, and even more are walking across the country in her memory.
After the walk, the Downing family is holding an after party at the Oviedo Alehouse. Participants are welcome to attend.
